Writing a Diary
Write & Destroy

This is an awesome and very satisfying technique for Processing Emotions! Get ready to let out whatever you're feeling and hold nothing back! It's gonna feel good!

We recommend doing this at a set time each day or week. You can also choose to set aside time for it whenever particularly triggering events come up in life.

One more thing: as you read about this technique, consider how wonderfully it applies each of the five Core Principles of Processing Emotions.

Let's Get to It! Here's What to Do:

1 - Write

2 - Destroy

3 - Move on

Get a piece of paper and writing utensil. Write down EVERYTHING you're feeling. If you're feeling something toward a specific person, you might write a letter to them (that they'll never read) or just describe your feelings to no one in particular. Be sure to GET OUT EVERYTHING. And we mean EVERYTHING.

Questions like the following might help you dig deep into every nuance of your emotions:

  • How many different words can you use to describe your feelings?

  • What triggered your feelings?

  • How do these feelings affect your thoughts and vice versa?

  • How sensations do you experience in your body as you feel this?

  • What memories are connected to these feelings?

  • What symbols or metaphors would capture just how you feel?

  • How are these feelings affecting how you think and feel about yourself, specific people, the world, the past, the future, etc.

Enjoy this step! You get to get everything out and no one else is going to read it so you don't have to worry about hurting anyone!

Once you get everything out, destroy the paper. Burning it can be a particularly fun way to destroy it. Ripping it up into tiny pieces also works. Maybe you can think of another creative way to do it. Just do whatever completely destroys the paper and helps you release the emotions. Enjoy the catharsis!

After destroying the paper, do whatever helps you completely let go of the emotions and move on. Here are some things we recommend:

  • Wash your hands.

  • Drink pure water with the intention of filling yourself with goodness and healing.

  • Go outside and breathe the fresh air.

  • Exercise or dance. Move your body!

  • Stretch.

  • Take full breaths and let them out. Smile.

You might find that after you're done, the same emotions come up again later. That's great! That's letting you know that there is more to process. You can do the Write & Destroy steps again or you can use another Emotion Processing technque.

You Can Do This for Your Ancestors

Sometimes the feelings we're feeling are actually a form of ancestral memory. Families are connected energetically and the feelings of one family member can show up in another. This gives us a wonderful opportunity to help each other.

For example, if your ancestor died without processing important feelings, they may want to process them now so that they can move move past them. Mortal feelings are connected to physical processes like hormones so your deceased ancestors needs a body to process their feelings in. If you want, your body can be that for them.

Try doing a write & burn session with the intention of processing the feelings of an ancestor. Let your gut lead out and just write whatever comes to you. You're going to destroy it anyway so it doesn't matter if you get it wrong. You might be surprised about what comes out. As you process your ancestors' feelings, you and they will be blessed.
